Heart of Forma OST by pftq
Heart of Forma OST
This is music for a small side-scroller indie space game that was under development by a colleague.  The game is light-hearted and somewhat retro, so the music will sound cheesy and a little MIDI-ish at times.  I went pretty loose with my composing here and just went with whatever flowed to me rather than try to think too hard.  Probably the most fun and relaxed I've had composing in a while.  A lot of my influence probably comes from older Sega or PS1 games.

Unfortunately, the game appears to have stalled in production, so I wrapped up what I could of the song after about 2 years of it sitting idle.

May.10 - Jun.12 2016

This is probably my most thematically interesting and coincidentally longest piano piece so far. It may actually be more of a series of songs like chapters in a story, but I leave them together since it was originally played on the spot in one session. I'm also finally becoming more comfortable improvising both hands at once and switching fluidly between keys without really thinking about it.

The piece itself originally was just me messing around in a new key but upon listening back really brings to mind the scenes of a character embarking on a journey into the world and the lessons that come, a sort of coming of age. The piece evolves as the character goes from an inexperienced newcomer to a more inquisitive and observant student of those around, before finally setting out one last time to face the world again. You can hear the parts where the character may be sailing off prematurely at first and charging head-first before failing, becoming more humble and learning, and then facing the storm again with more experience and appreciation of the journey itself. It's a bit of a hero's journey, though it really just fits any story with a protagonist and tale of exploration.

Hiraeia (Piano) by pftq
Hiraeia (Piano)
Accidentally played this randomly at first (literally had my eyes closed and didn't know what key I was in). I actually forgot it for a few days before sitting down to record it.

The song's pretty simple to play and somewhat repetitive, but I like it.  It has a nostalgic and dream-like feel to it, like you're always on a journey of sorts but never quite finding the place you belong, a longing to return home to a place of familiarity except that it never existed and probably never will.  A friend described it best as peaceful but bittersweet.
